  • 1st Presentation: Unlocking AI’s Potential in Public Finance: Global Trends and Insights from Microsoft: This session explores AI’s transformative impact on the public sector, with insights from global Microsoft leaders Olivia Neal & Valentina Ion. It will cover AI’s potential in revolutionizing public sector operations, global trends in AI adoption for public finance, and applicable AI capabilities for finance professionals. Wendy Braithwaite, CFO of Microsoft Canada, will share lessons from Microsoft’s own digital transformation, offering practical insights for finance professionals.

  • 2nd Presentation: Rethinking AI Governance: Justice, Sustainability, and the Future of AI: Public sector, private sector, and civil society organizations have implemented many types of AI governance initiatives with the aim of ensuring benefits and preventing harms from AI. These initiatives are proving to be frequently ineffective at protecting vulnerable people against physical, psychological, economic, and environmental harms caused by AI systems. This talk will survey the current AI governance landscape with a focus on Canada, offering critical insights into why AI governance is often ineffective at preventing harms and how we can create a more just and sustainable future for AI.

  • 3rd Presentation: Navigating AI in Government: How it will Impact OPS Finance: As AI becomes more prevalent, this session will explore the critical implications for Ontario Public Service (OPS) finance professionals. Hear about the transformative potential of AI, focusing on the ethical considerations and governance frameworks essential for ensuring its transparent, responsible, and accountable deployment. Learn about the best practices and strategies for integrating AI in a way that aligns with the core values and regulatory standards of the Ontario government. Through real-world examples and forward-looking insights, participants will be equipped with the knowledge needed to navigate the evolving landscape of AI in government finance.

Olivia is Director of Government Strategy in Microsoft’s Worldwide Public Sector team. In this capacity, she works with teams across Canada and the USA, as well as around the world, to help governments to use AI and digital tools to be more effective. As the founder of Microsoft’s Public Sector Center of Expertise, and host of the ‘Public Sector Future’ podcast she has built ambition, confidence, and capability in digital transformation.

Valentina Ion

Public Finance Global Lead at Microsoft

As Senior Director of Public Finance and Administration, Valentina leads the Microsoft sales and industry solutions strategy, enabling a strong organization that supports Ministries of Finance, Tax Agencies, Customs and Trade Agencies, National Treasuries as well as Financial Market Regulators, embarking on the digital transformation journey. She has a diverse background in industry sales strategy and execution, business management as well as, marketing and product management.

Wendy Braithwaite

Chief Financial Officer, Microsoft Canada, Microsoft

Wendy is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Microsoft Canada. She is responsible for providing financial leadership to the subsidiary, drives shareholder value, and plays a critical role in key strategic growth and profitability initiatives as well as the organization’s efforts to maintain a fully compliant culture.

Blair Attard-Frost

AI Policy Advisor, Ethicist, & Lecturer, University of Toronto

Blair Attard-Frost is an interdisciplinary researcher, educator, and writer. As a PhD Candidate and SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholar at the University of Toronto, Blair applies a trans feminist lens to investigate the impacts and governance of artificial intelligence in Canada. Drawing upon 10+ years of experience working across public sector, academic, and startup environments, Blair advises organizations, advocates for community-led AI governance, and teaches courses on AI ethics and AI policy at University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information and Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. Blair’s creative projects combine speculative fiction, surrealism, and transgender perspectives to explore potential futures of AI governance.

Joyce Drohan

Chief Artificial Intelligence & Technology Officer/Assistant Deputy Minister, Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement, Ontario Public Services

Joyce leads Enterprise Strategy, Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Digital for Ontario. Joyce is an award-winning visionary leader with a unique background at the intersection of corporate strategy, innovation, and exponential technologies. Prior to her current role, Joyce was a Global Senior Vice President and Chief Data Officer at Sanofi, a Partner at Deloitte and PwC leading Data, Artificial Intelligence and Technology practices and a Senior Policy Director for the UK Government.
