Dan Maloley

Dan Maloley is manager of special examinations and financial audits within the internal audit function at Employment and Social Development Canada.

With more than 20 years experience in the federal public service in the areas of audit, assurance and financial systems, he has had engagements in many different departments through his work at the Department of Finance, Consulting and Audit Canada, the Receiver General and CRA. 

Dan is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA CMA) and a Certified Internal Auditor.

Dan began volunteering with fmi*igf in 2001, having served as president of the Capital Chapter in 2008 as well as National Co-Chair of the 2011 PSMW in Edmonton.

In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time hiking and biking with his wife and three children in Ottawa.


Derek Cockburn – Chair

Derek Cockburn is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CGA) working within the Province of BC as a Contract Manager supporting four Economy Sector Ministries, as well as many Crown Corporations, Agencies, Boards and Commissions.  For the past 29 years, Derek has been a leader, specializing in procurement/contract management, financial management, risk management, procurement and financial training, auditing, financial reporting, financial controls, and strategic planning.

Derek has also worked as a Sessional Accounting Instructor at Royal Roads University, University of Victoria and Camosun College in Victoria.

In his spare time, Derek enjoys spending time in the greater outdoors, being involved in athletics, and volunteering with local non-profits.

Athena Dinos – Governance Director

Having completed her CPA-CGA and MBA, Athena is currently the Regional Finance Manager for the Department of Canadian Heritage – Prairies and Northern Region.  A long time FMI member, Athena has served on her chapter board for over 10 years, hold various positions including Chapter President and Treasurer. At the National level, Athena served on the Finance and Audit Committee for two years before transitioning to the National Board of FMI where she served as Wester Liaison for four years. 

Outside of the government and FMI, Athena has significant board experience working for numerous Not-For-Profit organizations. Although she has primarily been involved in the areas of finance, she has had significant experience in governance and policy development. In addition, she has over 20 years of experience in education and program development, serving as the Comptroller and Board member of a small independent school, as well as significant experience in small/medium sized business management as the proprietor of three separate business ventures.

Sherry Sharpe – Secretary-Treasurer

Sherry is the past President of the FMI-Capital Chapter.  She held this position from 2017-2020. During her term as Chapter Chair, Sherry was the Chair of the Chapter Advisory Council, FMI, from 2018-2020.  Prior to this, Sherry was the Chapter Chair of the CPA, CGA Ottawa Chapter from 2011-2013 and Past Chair from 2014-2016.

Sherry now owns and manages an incorporated business where she provides consulting services as a CFO for various not-for-profit organizations and consulting services for the federal government.

Sherry has her Masters of Business Administration (2006) and her CPA, CGA designation (2005).  Sherry is fluently bilingual and sits on a number of boards of volunteer organizations.

She brings a wealth of experience as a transformative, strategic executive who s energetic, results-driven and focused whose proven experience includes building high performance teams and leading significant performance improvement in large, complex organizations as well as small and medium enterprises as a collaborative partner and strategic council to senior management and their teams. She has significant experience in all aspects of several executive level positions in government and the not-for profit sector. Key strengths include strategic and corporate business planning, designing and implementing infrastructure and coaching and mentoring individuals. 

Sherry brings her strengths to the FMI National team in building strong viable, productive teams.  She brings a strategic planning and financial management perspective to FMI and will contribute actively in the growth and evolution of the organization.

Gary Wuschnakowski – Vice-Chair

Gary Wuschnakowski has been a member of the Ontario Public Service for 33 years and has held several senior management positions over that time.  Currently he is the Director of Financial Capacity, Control and Assurance with the Provincial Controller Division of the Ontario Treasury Board Secretariat and is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Financial Management Institute of Canada.  Previously, Gary held roles as Provincial Controller and Chief Risk Officer within Treasury Board Secretariat.  His current responsibilities include the development and implementation of a Comptrollership Learning Academy under the new Office of the Comptroller General with the intent to attract, develop, and sustain/retain comptrollership talent and ensure robust comptrollership talent pathways within line ministries and central agencies.
