12:15 – Presentation by Trevor De Ryck, CPA, CA – How Good People Rationalize Bad Decisions

Event Summary:

“How Good People Rationalize Bad Decisions” discusses the largest municipal fraud in U.S. history and how the perpetrator was discovered. Also presented is a fraud that occurred at ING (a financial services company) and the red flags identified that brought this fraud to light. The role of whistle blowers in the shaping of history is explored.

Materials for this presentation were written by Kelly Richmond Pope, Ph.D., CPA. Kelly is an Associate Professor in the School of Accountancy at DePaul University in Chicago, teaching forensic accounting and ethical leadership. Kelly also engages in fraud and white-collar crime research.

Speaker Biography:

Trevor De Ryck, CPA, CA is an employee of the City of Winnipeg as a Commodity Tax & Financial Systems Specialist. He has been with the City for 22 years. Previously, he was employed with Mennonite Central Committee and before that he served for two years in Denver, Colorado, assisting in setting up an inner-city credit union. He has been on the boards of non-profit organizations for the past 30 years, including as Treasurer of FMI – Manitoba Chapter. Trevor enjoys curling in the winter, bicycling during the summer, and spending time with family. He is married and is the father to two university-aged sons.
