The St. John’s Chapter of The Financial Management Institute Presents: Adjusting to the New Reality of Population Dynamics in Newfoundland and Labrador: implications for industry, community and democracy
On Thursday February 17, 2022, Dr. Rob Greenwood will discusses how decades of out-migration, rural to urban shift, and dropping fertility rates have come home to roost in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Harris Centre’s Regional Analytics Lab (RAnLab) has developed leading edge techniques to track and assess regional demographics, labour markets and sector dynamics. This capacity complements the Harris Centre’s work, over close to two decades, in regional economic development and regional governance. Successive governments have promoted revenue-generating resource industries, return migration and immigration. While all of these measures are essential, they have skirted complementary policies to build regional governance capacity within the province, measures to enhance productivity across all sectors, and to promote innovation in the public, private and community sectors. Necessity is the mother of invention. Can we rise to the challenge of re-inventing out institutions and re-invigorating our democracy – and culture?

Dr. Rob Greenwood - Associate Vice President, Public Engagement and External Relations and Director of The Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development, Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Rob is lead on the Public Engagement Framework for the University, which coordinates and supports the University’s collaboration with partners and stakeholders. In this capacity, he is also responsible for the Signal Hill Campus (including the Emera Innovation Exchange, Graduate Student Accommodations, Conference Services and Events, and the Johnson Geo Centre), the Botanical Garden, the Newfoundland Quarterly, Alumni Engagement, Strategic External Relations and the Harris Centre. The Harris Centre’s mandate is to coordinate and facilitate Memorial University’s educational, research and outreach activities in the areas of regional development and public policy.
Rob has operated his own consulting business and has served as a Director and Assistant Deputy Minister of Policy in Economic Development departments in Newfoundland and Labrador and in Saskatchewan. He was Vice President, Corporate Development, Information Services Corporation of Saskatchewan, and was founding Director of the Sustainable Communities Initiative, a partnership of the University of Regina, the City of Regina, and the National Research Council of Canada. He has taught, consulted, published and presented extensively on community economic and regional development, strategic economic planning, sectoral and cluster development, knowledge mobilization and public engagement.
